Wombat Wisdom

I discovered something pretty wild recently: wombats produce cube-shaped poop. Say what?! While it may seem pretty random, there’s a practical reason behind it: the cube shape prevents the poop from rolling away, allowing it to stay exactly where the wombat intends to place it. And, you might be surprised to know, a wombat needs it's poop to have stability if it's going to fulfill its purpose.

You see, the wombat’s carefully placed droppings serve as markers, helping it navigate and establish its territory. I think there's a takeaway for us in this, too. In his first letter to the Corinthians , Paul tells them to "be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58 NKJV). Much like the wombat's waste, our lives, anchored in Christ, should leave clear markers of God’s presence, stability, and purpose in a world that often feels chaotic and unstable.

When we build our lives on the solid foundation of Jesus' teachings and His love, we gain the strength to stand firm, even in the face of adversity. Being steadfast and immovable doesn’t mean being inflexible or resistant to change, but rather, it means that our core—our faith, values, and commitment to God—remains unaltered, no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in.

God has placed each of us where we are for a reason, with a purpose that only we can fulfill. Like the wombat’s markers, our actions, words, and faith should signal to the world that we belong to Christ, that we are guided by His truth, and that we are committed to His work. Our lives have the potential to be a testament to the stability and hope that comes from trusting in God, no matter how unpredictable life may be.

So, as we continue to grow in our relationship with God, let's remember that our labour with, and for, Him is not in vain. Every act of love, every moment of service, and every stand we take for righteousness is significant in God’s eyes. I bet you never thought a marsupial's excrement could point you back to Jesus (!) but just as the wombat’s droppings mark its territory, our steadfast faith and unwavering commitment to God’s work can serve as markers of His kingdom on earth.

Application:

Why not take a moment to reflect on your life. Are there areas where you feel shaken or uncertain? Consider what aspects of your life need a firmer foundation in Christ.

Set aside some time and ask God to strengthen your faith and make it immovable. Additionally, think about how you can be a marker of God’s presence in your community. How can you let your life be a clear reflection of the stability and hope that come from a deep and abiding faith in Christ?
