Faith, not Filth

I was driving to work the other day and a pickup truck in front of me had little holes at the back so that all the muddy, mucky rainwater and sludge could drain out. Thing is, it was leaving a trail of grime and slime for all who followed behind.

It made me wonder.

What are you depositing?

For the generations that are growing up behind you, those that are watching your actions, listening to your words, contemplating your behaviour… are you leaving a trail of grime and slime, a mess that they’ll have to wade through? Or are you leaving a legacy of light, life and love?

Proverbs 13:22 tells us that it’s the good that leave an inheritance for their children’s children.

But how do we do this?

One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.

Psalm 145:4 NIV

Growing up I had inspiring Sunday School teachers and leaders who shared stories of what God was doing in their lives – they made me want to know this Jesus they spoke of. I had parents who would share bible verses that God was speaking to them – they made me want to read this book for myself. There were young adults who weekly took time to invest in me as a young teen… I was fortunate enough to be in the wake of those leaving a trail that pointed to Jesus and, as Paul exhorts, I could follow them as they followed Jesus (1 Cor 11:1).

There’s no doubt about it – we need to get rid of the grime and muck we’re carrying in our lives. But let’s ensure we’re not letting it leak all over the place for those following behind.

Share your faith, not your filth!
